WebI just tested a 40MB PLY file ( edit: 2M tris) and Blender opens up using 16MB of RAM and with the PLY file imported it uses 440MB of RAM ( edit: saved .blend file size 130MB) It might be helpful to close absolutely everything else you can that's running on your computer before trying again. It works well. But when I import it in Blender, there is no point. The resulting object is empty. Do you have an idea on how to solve that? Thanks
