Chelate ring
The chelate effect is the greater affinity of chelating ligands for a metal ion than that of similar nonchelating (monodentate) ligands for the same metal. The thermodynamic principles underpinning the chelate effect are illustrated by the contrasting affinities of copper(II) for ethylenediamine (en) vs. methylamine. Thus, in these two chelates, metal d orbitals take part in the back donation via Craig type orientation with a 180° phase inversion. However, this is a speculation based on the ring currents value.
WebThe closed ring is known as a chelate ring. The greater the number of chelate rings in a complex, the more stable will the complex be. This phenomenon of binding of chelate ligands to a central metal atom is called chelation or chelate effect. Generally, these chelate ligands are organic compounds.
